On May 15, 2022, CNOOC Zhongjie Petrochemical Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Zhongjie Petrochemical") organized experts to assess and evaluate the achievements of the cooperative research and development project "Naphthenic Acid Corrosion Resistance Metal Material Modification (CTS) Technology and Industrial Application of Atmospheric and Vacuum Distillation Plant”, which was developed jointly by Zhongjie Petrochemical, Shenzhen Candor Technology Co., Ltd., and Sinopec Engineering Incorporation etc. ; It has been concluded after assessment by experts such as the National Data Center for Material Corrosion and Protection Science, the Chinese Society for Corrosion and Protection, and the Petrochemical Society, that the application effect of this technology was remarkable, reached the international leading level.

It is understood that the Bohai Bay crude oil processed by Zhongjie Petrochemical was mostly high-acid and low-sulfur crude oil, which caused serious corrosion to the equipment and made it difficult for the plant to operate for a long period. To this end, Shenzhen Candor Technology Co., Ltd., in conjunction with Sinopec Engineering Incorporation, Zhongjie Petrochemical, University of Science & Technology Beijing, and Beijing University of Chemical Technology, has carried out innovative research on chemical-electrochemical surface modification (CTS) technology of metal materials with austenitic stainless steel as the substrate, and obtained an amorphous dense film layer rich in chromium oxide, which is firmly anchored with a substrate, has excellent corrosion resistance and coking resistance under severe working conditions of high acid, high sulfur and the like in an industrial environment, as an innovative technology.

It is reported that CTS is a surface film modification technology for corrosion-resistant and anti-coking, which can enhance the surface corrosion resistance by eliminating deformation-induced martensite, solve the problem of significant decline in corrosion resistance caused by processing deformation, and make the complex structure equipment have balanced corrosion resistance as a whole. This technology was granted the first prize of science and technology of the Chinese Society for Corrosion and Protection in 2021.

"Every time the plant reduces an unplanned shutdown, it can save more than 7 million yuan in replacement of packing and overhaul costs." Li Zheng said, the manager of Zhongjie Petrochemical Equipment Management Department, CTS technology had passed the long-term industrial application verification in the atmospheric and vacuum distillation plants from 2017 to 2022, and the production and operation were stable after treatment. In 2022, the shutdown inspection found that CTS packing had no obvious corrosion and coking, with remarkable economic and social benefits.
